TRying to find where to put this, but you know the [livejournal.com profile] cakefic generator? Are you still willing to put new people in it? Because if so, I've just watched some Avengers episodes, and I think Emma Peel and John Steed would be excellent additions to the madness. Incidents with cake would be positively normal for them.

Ebony was obviously a popular choice in 14th C Scotland. (I think I stopped worrying about Scottish names when someone called their heroine Gwyneth.)

And, lol, thanks! I thought they were quite a fun bunch summaries, but you can never quite tell until they've been fed into the randomiser.

And, oh dear, Blackadder/Anne Elliott. captain Wentworth needs to get back to shore right now... ;-)

I think you said you'd been reading the books. Do they live up to the summaries? :-)

lost_spook: (Northanger reading)
Well, some of them are just snaffled from the back (although, meanly, the newer ones don't have extra summaries). I've just been reading some of the Regency ones, and the occasional odd one where they drew them in Regency costume, but in fact, it was set in New Zealand in the 1860s.

They mostly don't live up to the summaries. Some of them are decent, though and have even heard of historical accuracy and things. I am just reading them for the comedy of manners, when mostly they are being romantic fantasies and I just have to snatch at the bits where we meet. But I can read them without getting a headache in two pages, so what can I do? I'm hoping if I read enough and reading gets easier and less stressful I can move onto things I actually want to read, but anyway...

Hope the reading gets easier for you (and that next week's weather isn't too oppressive for you; it's very muggy here atm).

I'm wondering what it must be like to be a clergyman in the world where all these stories are set.

"Just so I'm prepared, Miss Yvonne, are you inclined to fainting fits? Are there any questions you would like me to answer about the duties of the wife in marriage? And are you, in fact, the young lady the groom is expecting to marry?"

Not quite; 'handsome' does indeed map to 'beautiful' and vice versa. The 'curvaceous' comes from 'tall'.

Ah, it wouldn't have occurred to me to gender translate tall at all. It'd make for some people on stilts on occasion I suppose, but so does the description as applied to men and no more incorrect than some of the blond(e)/red/raven-haired souls about in the summaries.

Looking through the list of prompts, I haven't always made the substitution; usually it's happened where the 'tall' came as part of a variant of the tall-dark-and-handsome combination.

The dying-and-mysteriously-reappearing love interest is called Cora Montague? Does she, perchance, have a soufflé obsession and resemble Jenna Coleman?

526:

526) Devilish Lord, Mysterious Miss by Anne Burrows
The brooding Lady Tegan Jovanka has still to recover from the death seven years ago of the Fourth Doctor, whose body was never found...
So when she encounters a fragile-looking man, the image of her betrothed, Tegan is convinced Four is still alive. But what should she do to claim him...?

(Or, what happened if Tegan didn't actually see Four regenerate).

527:
527) The Mistletoe Wager by Christine Merrill
Jenna Stannis, Countess of Anneslea, is surprised when her estranged husband, Edmund Blackadder, arrives home for Christmas, especially as he is still intent on divorce! The festive house party is in full swing when the guests are snowed in, and Edmund and Jenna find they are together under the mistletoe. Maybe the magic of Christmas is just what these two need to reignite their love...

Blackadder's never got on too well with the magic of Christmas, has he?

528:

528) Silent in the Sanctuary by Deanna Raybourn
Christmas festivities at Bellmont Abbey are brought to an abrupt halt by a murder in the chapel. Blood dripping from her hands, Lady Martha Jones's cousin claims the ancient right of sanctuary.
Forced to resume her deliciously intriguing partnership with the enigmatic detective Rumplestiltskin, Lady Martha is intent on proving her cousin's innocence. Still, the truth is rarely pure and never simple.

What has Adeola been doing now? Given the original title, I've got a nasty suspicion it's Vashta Nerada.

528) Silent in the Sanctuary by Deanna Raybourn
Christmas festivities at Bellmont Abbey are brought to an abrupt halt by a murder in the chapel. Blood dripping from her hands, Lady Lyta Alexander's cousin claims the ancient right of sanctuary.
Forced to resume her deliciously intriguing partnership with the enigmatic detective Silver, Lady Lyta is intent on proving her cousin's innocence. Still, the truth is rarely pure and never simple.

Silver and Lyta in an intriguing partnership? Yes, I could see that. Probably caused by those untidy Vorlons leaving artefacts of Doom lying around all over the place.

Ha, thanks! Some fun results. :-)

And Cora was a redhead, I think, but for Lord M picture Ten losing Rose and you about have it. Mind, The Mistletoe Wager was much more incorrect, since the husband actually engineered his wife's visit and she wasn't called Helena, she was called Elise. (There was nobody called Helena in the book at all.)

The Elise / Helena confusion suggests the worrying thought that we take more trouble over these summaries than the people who originally wrote them :-)

Hope the weather is being gentle to you at the moment; it's pretty oppressive where I am.

The first prompt's already in there, but I'll happily take the others. I've also added Bill, whom the generator is determined to ship with Servalan. I did eventually get it to produce this, though:

447) Who's Calling the Shots? by Jennifer Rae
Lights… Camera… Sizzling attraction!
Contestant Lydia Bennet’s idea of fun is not a dating reality show! But it’s an incredible chance to promote her family’s sports brand if only she could ignore the maddeningly hot director, Bill Potts!
When the cameras stop rolling, how long will they be able to keep their eyes on the prize… and their hands off each other… ?

Um, actually, I think a dating reality show would be Lydia Bennet's idea of heaven.

558) The Bridegroom's Bargain by Sylvia Andrew
'Till death us do part.' A solemn wedding vow, and one Lord Vislor Turlough's young bride ardently wishes to bring about sooner rather than later! Only minutes after the wedding, Charlotte Lucas is brandishing a pistol at her husband, accusing him of ruining her father and killing her brother.
So Turlough makes one more, wholly unexpected, vow - that he's completely innocent of both crimes and will prove it. If after six months she isn't totally convinced then he'll take the consequences. What he must do now is win Charlotte's trust - using every means at his disposal.

'A Wild Justice' sounds like it's the perfect vehicle for the genderswapped suffragette version of Adam Adamant. Except that since the original characters are called Annica and Sinclair, it's got to be these two...

559) A Wild Justice by Gail Ranstrom
Despite Lord Jeffrey Sinclair's determination to remain a bachelor — the better to avenge wronged women — his passionate response to Seven of Nine, elusive Countess of Auberville, swept him into a web of desire beyond his wildest imaginings. Lady Auberville wanted a manageable husband who asked no questions — what she got was an independent man with secrets...

560) The Butler Did It by Kasey Michaels
Vila Restal, Marquis of Westham, expects his butler to be awaiting his return home — even when that return follows a five-year absence. But he doesn't expect the horde of strangers who've taken up residence in his house, courtesy of that enterprising butler and a discreet classified ad. Vila's plan to toss his unwelcome tenants into the street is thwarted by a beautiful but indomitable debutante, Miss Ace McShane — who's not averse to a bit of blackmail for a good cause.
Now Vila finds himself squiring the lovely Ace to the ton's most fashionable events — and what's more surprising, he's beginning to enjoy it. Surely he's not falling for such an infuriating woman? The butler has a lot to answer for — but then again, it's so hard to find good help...

Oh, and one I spotted independently...

561) Cursed By Cupid by Wendy Sparrow
With luck, they might survive their first date...
Dear Reader, this letter is to inform you of Cupid’s curse, which will fall upon you if you don’t pass this email on to three friends within three hours.
the Mistress didn’t believe in the curse and now she hasn’t had a second date in three years… because all her first dates end in disaster. In fact, she just accidentally punched a guy in the face, leaving her without a date for Valentine’s Day!
Servalan isn’t sure if the curse is real or not, but if dating Missy means occasionally getting assaulted with a chocolate shake or nearly electrocuted, it’s worth the risk. Armed with more lucky charms than a bowl of cereal, Servalan will have to battle flying swords, Russian mail-order brides, and shrimp linguini if she’s going to win the girl.

THE ACCIDENTAL MISTRESS - Tracy Anne Warren

To escape an arranged marriage, spirited Lily Bainbridge has staged her own death and - disguised as a boy - fled to London and a life of freedom.

Yet her plans to masquerade as an independent widow are thwarted by an encounter with Ethan Andarton, the powerful and dangerously attractive Marquis of Vessey who wants to make her his mistress. But Lily is afraid that if she gives the Marquis her innocence, he'll also steal her heart.

THE OFFICER AND THE PROPER LADY - Louise Allen

Lieutenant Hal Carlow was a fine soldier, but he was also a flirt, a rake and a scoundrel! In general, he tried to steer clear of proper young ladies - no fun at all - and spend time with the sort of women who appreciated his finer qualities...

Julia Tresilian's duty was to find a husband, but her prospective suitors bored her to tears! Yet even talking to the incorrigible Hal Carlow was dangerous to marriage prospects, let alone anything more...

The first one was already in there, but I added the second.
564) The Officer and the Proper Lady by Louise Allen
Lieutenant Susan Ivanova was a fine soldier, but she was also a flirt, a coquette and a scoundrel! In general, she tried to steer clear of proper young gentlemen - no fun at all - and spend time with the sort of men who appreciated her finer qualities...
Edward Ferrars's duty was to find a wife, but his prospective suitors bored him to tears! Yet even talking to the incorrigible Susan Ivanova was dangerous to marriage prospects, let alone anything more...
And also created a 'Buffy' option for the cast:
284) Undercover Wife by Debra Webb
Specialist Spike was dedicated to duty — the mission always top priority — and he'd do anything to carry out an assignment. Even if it meant posing as the unthinkable: husband to the newly 'recruited' Buffy Summers....
He'd shown up in the middle of the night and offered Buffy her freedom if she'd pose as his wife to catch an insidious drug lord/arms dealer. Except, given the compromising position she found herself in as victim of a frame-up, Buffy was totally at the mercy of her 'guardian' as an untrained, stand-in agent. All she had to do was assume someone else's identity, learn the ins and outs of weaponry and share a bed with her dangerously attractive 'husband', Spike. And if she came out of this with her life intact, she'd surely lose her heart in the process!

Cool! The Buffy option immediately came up with some gems. It's always a good fandom for these sorts of things. (LotR, OTOH, I can testify, comes out just terrifying, generally.)

It does, though, seem to be lacking Angel (both the character, and Angel the Series), which in the case of the former is quite the omission, you could have shippers attacking you for favouring Spuffy. (Also no Darla or Drusilla? Darla and Drusilla are excellent for shippage options.) Anyway, it's still great, though, but I assume you want beta-feedback on the level of "Where's X major character?" Sorry, if not!)
25th-Aug-2017 10:44 pm (UTC)
john_amend_all: (angels)
The difficulty with the vampiric characters is that they tend to have only one name, which can be a bit awkward when trying to populate the 'full name' and 'family name' fields. Still, I've added the three characters you listed.
26th-Aug-2017 09:13 am (UTC)
lost_spook: (Default)
Thanks! And, heh, that's easy - they're just Angel Vampire (aka Liam aka Angelus) and Darla Vampire and Drusilla Vampire, the Vampire family! :-p

I know I'm very demanding, but are you planning to add in AtS with it? (Not sure it'd be worth doing separately as there's only really Fred, Gunn, Lilah, Lorne, and Lindsay who aren't in BtVS as well - Faith, Angel, Wesley, Spike, Harmony are all in Buffy anyway). I don't know what the individual limits are for fandom lists, though, or how fiddly it is, so don't throw things at me!
30th-Aug-2017 09:08 pm (UTC)
john_amend_all: (angels)
OK, the Angel characters should be in there now. Let me know if I've made any slip-ups.

I also added the Rosie M. Banks summary:

565) Navy Nurse by Rosie M. Banks
Tegan Jovanka, pretty Navy nurse, had an attack of love at first sight. And she didn’t want to be cured.
The man was tall, good-looking and French. Thrilled by his kisses, Tegan longed for the day she would be Mrs. the Fifth Doctor.
But Five never talked of marriage. And he was mysterious about his private life, especially the source of his wealth.
Meanwhile, the Office of Naval Intelligence had rated Five “top priority.” And beautiful Nyssa of Traken, ONI agent, was making a particularly thorough check. Nyssa loved Tegan deeply. She’d stop at nothing to save her from the dangers that threatened her happiness — and her life.

LOL, that summary is a worrying fit...

And thanks! I do like the Angel characters, and it instantly gave me Faith/Lilah, so the generator knows what it's about.

'Newly discovered inheritance'. Would this be a fobwatch perchance?
