Now Christmas is over, I think I might as well finish these off.

DCI Slack: Bit less of the size 12 boots approach, eh, lads?
An old friend of Miss Marple's, one Ruth van Rydock, asks her for help. Ruth is worried about her sister, Carrie Louise. Could Miss Marple possibly visit Carrie Louise's house and investigate the situation? Cut for length )

Jason Rafiel: Another murder? How many d'you want?

It's cold, wet and rainy... why not take a nice trip, at least in spirit, to Barbados? Sun, sea, sand and corpses turning up all over the place.

I'm sure it's not a coincidence that the last four Miss Marple books to be adapted by the BBC were the ones which had previously been done as films. I'd guess it was a rights issue; fortunately, whatever it was, it must have been resolved, and the four remaining books were done as one-off telemovies. The first of these is 4:50 from Paddington; coincidentally, in a previous adaptation (the film Murder She Said) Joan Hickson had played Mrs Kidder, the housekeeper.

Jason Rafiel, a millionaire whom Miss Marple knew slightly, dies. In his will, he leaves a very large sum of money to Miss Marple, on the condition that she performs an investigation for him. She is given two tickets for a tour of historic houses and gardens. But it seems that she isn't the only person who's been sent there by the late Mr Rafiel. There's a retired headmistress, a professor who works for the Home Office... and two women who seem to be taking a very close interest in her.

Miss Marple goes to stay at a London hotel she remembers from her youth. At first she is delighted that nothing there seems to have changed in decades, but she quickly comes to realise that a great deal of effort is being put into this illusion of changelessness. Something is being concealed: what, and why?

"It's very dangerous to believe people. I haven't for years."
  — Miss Marple

Newlyweds Giles and Gwenda Reed, house-hunting in Devon, come across Gwenda's dream house: Hillside. At Gwenda's insistence, they buy it and move in. But Gwenda finds the house disconcertingly familiar: she knows the location of a blocked-up door, and the pattern of the wallpaper in a sealed cupboard. And then she gets a full-blown flashback of a woman being strangled...
