That seemed awfully familiar in some ways...

Of course, having mined Reaper Man for ideas myself, I might be seeing patterns that aren't there. But I don't think so. Particularly not when there's a cameo by Lord Cut-Me-Own-Throat Sugar doing his bit to make sure that the pretty paperweights are circulated as widely as possible.

And... then there's Kate. I wondered if that was who she was the moment she first showed up, and indulged in the requisite fannish squee when she fessed up. Taking a fan's privilege to interpret every nuance of a show as a veiled slight by the showrunner to his predecessor, I'll read her new policies as a slap on the wrist to the all-guns-blazing UNIT that RTD was so fond of. Though Doctor/Brigadier shippers may not like their ship being officially sunk; and is the hereditary principle really the best way to appoint a new head of UNIT?

I did have a brief thought that perhaps she was the Brig and Liz's daughter. Inheriting her scientific mind from her mum! I liked her a lot and wish she'd been in it more.

I did think it was kind of familiar, but I was thinking of the daffodils in "Terror of the Autons". There was a whole lot of Three homage going on in this episode, wasn't there?

Looking at my flist, it seems a lot of people would have liked Liz to be involved in one way or another.

I think what made me think of Reaper Man was the way the cubes turned up out of nowhere, rather than being handed out like the daffodils.

I'm guessing it was filmed before Caroline dies or they would have added something. Have you heard her audio Blue Tooth? I listened to it today and it was Brilliant! One of the best cyber men stories

Oh, hey, I can't believe I didn't spot the Reaper Man similarity until you mentioned it. Yeah.

If Doris's existence doesn't sink the Doctor/Brig ship, why would Kate's? And as a firm believer that Virgin is canon, I'm naturally delighted to see a character from a Missing Adventures novel (yeah, it was also a video, whatever.)

It would sink it because the Doctor outright states he hasn't been kissed by a Lethbridge-Stewart before :-)

No; I've only bought a couple of the Companion Chronicles (Fear of the Daleks and The Great Space Elevator</cite). Though that hasn't stopped me alluding to Jean Basemore in fanfic :-)

If you do decided to get more I'd really recommend Blue tooth. The Old soliders one with the Brig is also very good too.

You could argue, if you wanted, that when Eleven says he's never done something before, he just means since he was Eleven. He said in "The Impossible Astronaut" that he's never drunk wine before, and we know that Three's done that.

What he says in TIA is "I'm 1103. I must have drunk it some time." But obviously long enough ago that he'd forgotten what it tasted like.
