It's in The Hobbit (when Smaug falls on Laketown) -- that's where I first encountered it.

Huh. I've definitely encountered it before, then. Maybe by the time I was that deep in The Hobbit I'd spent enough time interpreting unfamiliar words from context that they'd stopped registering.
