AO3 Questions Meme

Memed from [personal profile] shivver:
1. How many works do you have on Ao3?

353.

Of course, this question reflects a certain parochialism on the part of whoever wrote the questions, since there are other archives than AO3 in the world. But it may not necessarily so easy to extract stats from them, I suppose.

2. What’s your total Ao3 word count?

895,393.

3. How many fandoms have you written for?

A quick count of the stats page suggests I've used 82 fandom tags, and I'm not going to enumerate all of them. Perhaps it would be simplest to say 'hrair'.

4. Top 5 fics by kudos?
  1. Persistence @ 343
  2. Noblesse Oblige @ 166
  3. Vox et Praeterea Mysteria @ 113
  4. 22 Pairs @ 64, squeaking in ahead of...
  5. The Problem of Darley Place @ 63

The top two seem to have got where they are because they're canonical Austen pairings, and the third because... I don't know. Maybe people ship Ace / Dalek☛Oswin? As for the fourth, I suspect it's because all its character and pairing tags form a widely-cast net with which to ensnare readers. And the last one is a Sherlock Holmes / Miss Marple crossover, so gets prospective readers from two largish fandoms.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why/why not?

I used to, assiduously — it seemed only polite that if the commenter made the effort to comment, I should make the effort to thank them. These days I'm sorry to say I've missed replying to some, because by the time I get round to looking at them it's weeks or months later and it feels awkward replying to a comment that old.

6. A fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Probably a tossup between The Logical Conclusion in which Martha kills Zoë for completely understandable and totally incorrect reasons, and A Travesty In One Act, which was and remains my reaction to The Timeless Children and any official Who material in its future light cone.

7. Do you write crossovers?

If I do write anything these days, it is as likely to be one as not. It's often fun to call in someone from outside a universe to give an impartial opinion, or who has abilities that would be helpful in a particular situation. (For example, Ashildr's tattoo from Face the Raven has the ability to kill someone, properly dead, no takey-backeys; I found that very useful when I was writing Out for the Count and needed Dracula taken permanently out of the picture.)

Or I might do it just because a random generator's suggestion caught my imagination.

8. Ever received hate on a fic?

Not in person, though A Travesty In One Act netted a mildly disparaging comment. Business as Usual got some criticism on an anonymous meme because I'd called the Delgado Master tall (apparently an all-too-common error that got on that particular poster's nerves) and they didn't think the historical AU setting was played up enough.

9. Do you write smut?

No, though I've experimented with getting generative AI to do it for me. But I've never put the result in a fanfic.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge.

11. Ever had a fic translated?

Yes, seven of them have been translated into Russian (all long before the current unpleasantness). Certainly at one point it seems that the Russian fandom had translate-a-thons, or some similar phenomenon.

12. Have you ever co-written a fic?

Not a complete one, though I contributed to the never-completed Dark Carnival round robin. And I did once have a commenter on one of my fics who was very insistent that we should do a collaboration, but didn't seem to have any idea of what the collaboration should be. That one got no further than a couple of paragraphs of private eye monologue ending:

If Gallifreyan society wanted the Doctor so badly, I decided, it was going to have to find places for the rest of us, whether it wanted to or not. And talking of the Doctor, I might as well take a leaf out of his book. Even in a perfect city like this, there had to be trouble. And I was going to find it.

My name's Nyssa of Traken, and I'm a private 'tec.

13. All time fav ship?

AO3 says I've written ten Jamie/Sam fics with everything else in single figures, so I'll take that as evidence of my preferences (Quite apart from anything else, Sam is always fun to write).

14. WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I don't usually post WIPs to AO3. The closest I've come is probably The Girl Without a Past, which ends on a cliffhanger I can't resolve unless one day I were to watch Freewheelers.

I've got numerous calcified WIPs sitting on my hard drive, of course, at lengths from anything up to a sentence to multi-thousand word chunks.

15. Writing strengths?

[personal profile] primsong once said I wrote action well, which coming from such an accomplished writer made me feel quite chuffed.

16. Writing weaknesses?

Well, there's not finishing fics I've started, but since those are confined to a directory on my hard drive no-one's going to know about those. Other than that, I think I'm pretty rubbish at emotional scenes, at least played straight; putting my tongue in my cheek sometimes helps.

17. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

The immediate question that came to my mind is: In what fandom would this phenomenon be common enough that someone would ask a meme question about it? I suppose it could be someone wanting to write Lord Peter Wimsey fanfic and wanting to do a love scene in untranslated French, or maybe a Tolkien fan who wanted to be sure their Sindarin was up to scratch.

Personally, the only time I've done anything of the sort, it's been to have a rude remark delivered in untranslated Welsh, and there I copy-pasted it directly from an online list of Welsh insults.

That said, now I've seen the question I want to write a fic where a crucial conversation is written in untranslated Vorlon or Shadow...

18. First fandom you wrote for?

Doctor Who... sort of. My early fic was in the This Time Round metaverse, so while it had recognisable versions of the characters it probably wouldn't be considered as 'real' Doctor Who by someone unfamiliar with the setting.

19. What’s your fav fic you’ve written so far?

Since you ask today, I find myself unreasonably fond of Ac Velut In Somnis because I got to write so many of the Knightmare characters and nudge against the boundaries of that universe. Ask on another day, you may get a different answer.

Good old Knightmare:) And a wide variety of fic!

Being pestered to do a colab is different. The nearest I've got was that my fic was good but they'd like it better if I'd written different characters with a different ship type comment.

So many fics!!

Funnily enough, I was thinking about TTR recently. Thanks to a challenge on here. ( They have a High School AU, right?)
