Day 5
In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. How did you come to fandom, why did you choose your fannish name, do you have more than one secret identity? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
I've been around long enough that I've probably told versions of this story far too many times already. That said: My first encounter with any sort of organised fandom was exclusively focused on Doctor Who. When I went to university, I encountered, within a few weeks of each other, physical meetings of DocSoc and online fandom in the form of USENET: rec.arts.drwho and alt.drwho.creative. Once I left university I more or less dropped both groups, but round about 2000 I returned to adwc and discovered the This Time Round universe in full swing. I contributed the occasional drabble, found no-one shot me down for so doing, built gradually up to longer fics and eventually made the transition from USENET to LiveJournal in 2007. (Though if I write This Time Round fic I still cross-post it to a.dw.c).
Regarding names, I'm not especially imaginative. On a.dw.c I posted under my
own name, because that's what we all did, and I carried that across to LJ for
want of anything better. On Dreamwidth I decided on
john_amend_all based on my liking for fixits, and finally got round to renaming my LJ account
to match last week. I don't have any other secret identities — though of course
you only have my word for that.
