Remember that opening scene I wrote six years ago on the train? It's been rewritten several times since, and I'm currently having one of my periodic attempts at constructing the rest of the fic to go with it.
The Colonel tapped the table, and the image was replaced by another. This was a close-up of one of the trenches. Lying at the bottom of the trench, with the soil dug away from it, was a lump of rock, with a half-melted look to it. It didn't look very interesting to me, but then I'm not an archaeologist.
The next picture showed the rock, still in its place, split open. The exposed surface was paler than the outside, but with a dark pattern visible on it.
On the lighter side of things, I'm trying to ship Jamie and Rose.
"A traveller, aye?" The knife was gone, and a moment later a figure stepped into the firelight: a young man, wearing some kind of sleeveless jacket, a kilt, and boots. He wouldn't have looked out of place at the festival, Rose thought, though she couldn't remember anyone there wearing Highland costume. His expression was difficult to make out in the flickering firelight. The third idea is just something that's been hanging around in my head for the last couple of days, and it involves Ace and her motley collection of charity workers from An Act Of Charity. I don't have a plot as such, just a fragment or two of dialogue.
Deez gave the costume a look that, by rights, ought to have set it on fire. "Not again. Why is it always me?"
"Because you're the only one who's trained to use it, dear," Dotty said.
"Then train someone else." Deez clenched her fists. "Queen Elizabeth I. I hate ——ing Queen Elizabeth I."
Dotty put on a severe face at such language, but the Director didn't even raise an eyebrow. "I'm not asking you to —— her," she said patiently. "Just dress up as her again. That's all."
