"Is it true, what they say about witches?" Benton asked. "I've seen what it says in Miss Grant's books."
"Books written by men, no doubt." Miss Hawthorne gave him a sharp look. "Let me disabuse you, Sergeant. Nearly everything you've heard about the Craft is fiction."
"So that means nothing'll happen if I do this?"
He pushed the bundle of sticks he was carrying into her arms, leaned forward, and kissed her.
Miss Hawthorne picked up the small, green amphibian that was now sitting on the Sergeant's empty uniform. "That story, on the other hand," she said, "is entirely true."
