It's been a year since I did this, and no-one seems to have picked it up as a meme this time round, but that's not going to stop me: Top Ten Fics on AO3, by as many metrics as I can think of. This year, I was able to use my stats downloader program to get the raw figures, rather than relying on AO3's 'sort by', which isn't particularly reliable.
By hit count
- Noblesse Oblige: 644 hits! I think AO3 must have more than its fair share of Darcy / Elizabeth shippers; as I said last year, that's a ridiculous number of hits for a 147-word ficlet without even a summary.
- The Murder of Cardinal Tosca: 560 hits. This one, I think, owes its hit count to the length of time it's been on AO3.
- Mimic: 532 hits. That's a new entry into the top ten, and the only Sapphire and Steel fic.
- The Path of Duty: 443 hits. Again, I think these come from the long time it's been there.
- Vox et Praeterea Mysteria: 378 hits. Not terribly surprising given how well-received it was.
- 24 Pairs: 372 hits. I think the moral to draw is: give a fic enough strange pairing tags, and they will come.
- Storytime! Macbeth: 339 hits.
- The Shy, Retiring Multicolour Man: 336 hits.
- Ac Velut In Somnis: 334 hits. I haven't previously seen much activity from the Knightmare fandom on AO3, so I'm not sure whether this is due to my promoting it in more places, posting weekly installments, or putting Ten and Rose in it.
- As I came thro' Sandgate: 318 hits. I think this must be due to incorporating a character from Pride and Prejudice.
Since several fics in that list owe their large hit counts to how long they've been there, I tried a hits per day metric.
- The Crawford Ritual: 2.03. Fics get most of their hits soon after they're posted, and this is my third most recent fic; but even so, I think it adds evidence for the theory that AO3 has a lot of Austen fans.
- Ac Velut In Somnis: 1.88. This is partly due to the fact that my downloader assumes a multi-part fic was all posted on its most recent day.
- As I came thro' Sandgate: 1.02. I definitely put this one down to the Austen fandom.
- Genius and Geniality: 1.01. The same considerations as Ac Velut apply, I think: a multi-part fic that I hawked around the Internet.
- Noblesse Oblige: 0.99. Yep, Austen again.
- Vox et Praeterea Mysteria: 0.92.
- The Poisoner: 0.91. Down to the 'recently posted' boost and using Clara, I think.
- Mimic: 0.89. Surprisingly high traffic for an older Sapphire and Steel fic.
- Childcare Arrangements: 0.86. This one is more down to being a recent work.
- Foregone Conclusion: 0.80. And so is that, most likely.
By kudos
- Vox et Praeterea Mysteria: Runaway winner with 31.
- Outside Context: 18. Obviously mild Irene Adler / Sapphire femslash is just what the doctor ordered.
- Noblesse Oblige: 15. It's that fic again!
- The Shy, Retiring Multicolour Man: 15.
- 22 Pairs: 13. Comes higher than 24 Pairs, despite its hit count being somewhat lower.
- 24 Pairs: 11. Yep, strange pairings seem to draw the crowds.
- A Spy Unmasked: 10. Frobisher and Sir David Attenborough seem to draw the crowds.
- Restitution: 10. It seems a high number for a simple Jamie/Victoria fixit, but who am I to argue?
- Works Outing: 10. Just as Mimic got all the hits, this one seems to have got all the kudos.
- Childcare Arrangements: 9. It shares this rating with another S&S fic, Between the Old Year and the New.
I then tried experimenting with kudos per hit, to get a 'satisfied customers' rating.
- Keep Mum: 13.9%. This metric seems to favour more recently-posted fics, but even so that seems a lot for a drabble.
- Outside Context: 10.2%.
- Childcare Arrangements: 10.1%.
- Truth Is What We Make It: 9.8%. This is one of the fun things this metric can throw up: a work in an obscure fandom with a tiny readership, but a lot of those readers seemed to like it. Particularly when last year, this was the fic with the fewest hits of all my work.
- Foregone Conclusion: 9.3%. As before, I think recent posting is part of this.
- The Consolidated Cookery Conundrum: 9.1%. Case in point, this is my most recently-posted fic.
- Vox et Praeterea Mysteria: 8.2%. Certainly not a new fic this time, though.
- The Ace-Team: 8.2%. I think more down to the low number of hits than the high number of kudos.
- Works Outing: 7.8%.
- The Nature of the Beast: 7.6%.
I also tried a kudos per day metric, but that didn't throw up anything particularly useful, except that it was even more biased towards new fic.
By comments
- Vox et Praeterea Mysteria: Topping the board again with 16.
- Interrupted Night: 11 comments, the same as last year, while VePM has overtaken it.
- Outside Context: 9 comments.
- The Way We Spy: 8 comments.
- Genius and Geniality: 7 comments.
- Works Outing: 7 comments.
- Childcare Arrangements: 6 comments.
- Sudden Flame: 6 comments.
- Depositum Custodi: 6 comments.
- Did you think these were just decorations?: 6 comments.
Bookmarks
AO3 bookmarks seem to be thinly used, and most of the fics in bookmark order also appear in the other lists. A Top 10 isn't possible because only nine fics have more than one bookmark:
- Vox et Praeterea Mysteria: 11. And when you bear in mind that the next highest is three...
- The Murder of Cardinal Tosca: 3.
- A Spy Unmasked: 2.
- 24 Pairs: 2.
- Genius and Geniality: 2.
- The Way We Spy: 2.
- Child of the Gods: 2.
- Things To Do in Leadworth in the Snow: 2.
- Noblesse Oblige: 2.
The Wooden Spoon
The following fics have the lowest absolute hit counts:
- Losing Face: 20 hits. This may be because I deliberately didn't use archive warnings, which might drive away the nervous.
- The Hounds of Heaven: 27 hits.
- Debriefing: 29 hits.
- Seasonal Decoration: 33 hits.
Some of these (like Seasonal Decoration) were imported with the original publication date, so wouldn't show up on lists of new fic. That's my excuse, anyway.
Teaspoon: Reviews + Favourites
Teaspoon doesn't have the range of statistics that AO3 does, and its
hit counts are pretty much random noise, so I
contented myself with a Reviews+Favourites metric. I also marked with a *
the ones that were recced on calufrax,
which can be a major boost for a fic:
- Assorted challenges: 26. Probably cheating because it's a ficlet collection, not an actual story.
- * Jamie's Angels in: Uninvited: 25
- * Among the Jarveys of the Metropolis: 23
- * A Turn In The Park: 19
- Things To Do In Leadworth in the Snow: 19
- Afternoon Off: 17
- Nominative Determinism: 16
- Relaxation and Recreation: 14
- * Old Shame: 14
- Death on the Marsh: 14
