I think my favourite new series companion departure story is still Doomsday. With this one, I got the feeling...

... that it was done at a frenetic pace so that we didn't spot any holes in the net closing inexorably around the Ponds. Just off the top of my head and without resorting to crossovers, I can think of two ways to undo the ending :-)

There comes a point, when reading a book with an unreliable narrator, when you stop believing anything it says, up to and including the page with the copyright information. I think I've now reached that point with the Moff and Matt Smith and Karen Gillan and the rest, about whether or not they'd ever bring Amy and/or Rory back (say, for an anniversary special, or for a regeneration story).

I'm not planning to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] eleven_romana this year — I don't want to make promises I mightn't be able to keep, and it'd be difficult to find a new angle on blue!cabbie!Romana — but I'll be surprised if there isn't an entry touching on Amy's and Rory's situation here.

Talking of crossovers, I can quite see Sapphire and Steel dealing with the nest of Angels using the method that Rory did. Except they'd have helpfully pushed him, or Detective Garner, or anyone else they could lay their hands on, off the roof, rather than wait for him to jump. Also, they'd have taken six episodes over it, which might have improved matters — the Weeping Angels seem to work better at a slow, steady pace.

Still with crossovers, it's the first time I've seen a new Weeping Angel story since watching Moondial. I'm now very suspicious of what, in the Whoniverse, the sundial at Belton House might be.
